DESIGN
The soft touch rubber finish on the mouse feels more premium than its price should allow, and that is a good thing. It feels heavy for a mouse of this size and price as well, again a good thing.
The left and right mouse buttons have a slight undulation to them, so that your fingers sit in the middle of them, a nice design choice. One minor gripe is that oils from your fingers easily show up on this mouse, though a simple wipe from a paper towel or microfiber cloth and they’ll come right off. We’d recommend the latter, since they don’t leave anything behind.
The cable is also braided, although it is a bit stiff and is prone to kinking if not taken care of. The fact that it is braided is very unexpected in a budget mouse and left us very pleased, as this is a feature usually reserved for higher end mice and keyboards.
It also features the ability to take the “Wings” off of it, which is a part of the lower outer shell of the mouse. We did not like using it this way, as it felt small to begin with, and most of us do not have large hands, so I would say for those with smaller hands that might be an option. Although when the wings are off the left and right mouse buttons sort of overhang on the mouse, exposing not necessarily sharp, but somewhat rough edges; but to each his own. Removing the wings takes a fine tipped Philips head screwdriver — not the kind used for eye glasses, but your standard Philips head will not fit. This was not a problem for us since we have several screwdriver kits lying around, but you may not have one of those at your disposal.
USING THE TT ESPORTS TALON BLU
So the design is solid, the features are pretty bare, but what about its gaming ability? Well, in about 15 hours of use in gaming and general desktop use it is a solid contender, the adjustable DPI is nice, though we do wish there was a way of changing the pre-configured DPI settings, as 500 is way to slow for our use; 750 feels a bit sluggish; but 1500 is a bit faster than this reviewer would like in StarCraft II. It was fine for FPS, and the other settings are just way too fast for us on a 1080p monitor. Those with higher resolution monitors might be fine with the higher DPI, or those less heavy handed than this reviewer.
In 3 hours of testing in Starcraft II the mouse felt fine, and we had no issue performing some basic micro and splitting with this mouse. More advanced maneuvering however gave us some trouble, but some of that has to do with getting used to a different mouse and a different DPI.
In 3 and a half hours of Battlefield 4 and CS:GO the mouse performed admirably at 1500 DPI, as this reviewer is a bit twitchy in those games. Oddly enough mouse acceleration was turned on in windows when we changed mice, and we were a bit worried it was firmware based acceleration. After a bit of tweaking it was fine and this reviewer was very happy with the overall performance of this mouse in gaming.
This reviewers hands don’t get very sweaty, but they never got sweaty using this mouse. We used this mouse over the course of 3 days, and it was very solid in gaming use and day to day use.
REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS
For its price, the Thermaltake Tt eSports Talon Blu is an amazing mouse that is comparable to mice twice its price, and represents a great value. Those with smaller hands won’t have the gripes I did, but those with larger hands might have problems as this is a small mouse. We do wish there was some basic software bundled with the mouse, as the DPI being locked to certain pre-set settings feels limiting. This is something of a standard with gaming mice today, but this is a budget mouse.
Those looking to upgrade from an OEM mouse from your pre-built computer, people looking for a replacement mouse that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, or for those who’ve built their first system this mouse is a fantastic contender, and as such I give it our Top Value award!
