COOLER MASTER STORM SKORPION
One of the more odder Cooler Master products is their newly-released Skorpion bungee. The bungee allows for desktop cable-management, and like the Recon is targeted towards gamers who are bound to have accessories such as mice, keyboards, and headsets.
To some it may seem as pointless as a paperweight, but it really is not. The intricate grooves and plastic body, coupled with the feet around the base are a testament to its name. The iron-weighted middle gives the Skorpion perfect balance, ensuring even the most energetic of gamers will not be moving it an inch. As always, the stylish Cooler Master Storm logo graces the middle.
I have used a few bungees before, but the Skorpion definitely takes the cake. The colouring matches the Cooler Master Storm theme, and it looks exactly like the frame of a real scorpion – from the feet, to the base, and right down to the stinger.
At first I was not quite sure if it would be a portable solution for those who may want to take their peripherals on-the-go, to places such as LAN events. Then I realized that the entire Skorpion can be disassembled to its core parts:
The flexible arm is what does most of the cable managing. You can honestly wrap your cords around any orientation imaginable, but the default is through the groove on the arm. The rubber arm itself can be bent in any direction, so it will conform to whichever way the cords are being pulled.
The feet are not made of the same flexible rubber, but are rather composed of synthetic plastic. They snap on and off, have a grip coating on the bottom to prevent movement, as well as some on the side for easy removal.
Having tested the Skorpion, I can conclude that these do indeed work. Even with frequent and erratic mouse movements, the Skorpion was easily kept in place.
FINAL WORDS AND CONCLUSION
Alas we arrive to the conclusion, one full of praise for Cooler Master; the Storm series finally has an all-encompassing lineup of gamer products. The Recon is definitely the only mouse I have had the pleasure of using that has rivaled my loved and coveted Sentinel Advance, and made by the same company no less. The Skorpion, while not a needed peripheral for gaming, is a nice addition to any desktop that suffers from messy cable-management.
The only feature I would have loved on the Recon is sleeved cabling. There is just a ton of upside for having it, and it overall just makes the mouse stand out even more. For the price of $40 though, I am extremely satisfied with everything the Recon offers, which is more than mice two/three times its price. Since the Skorpion is a more unorthodox product, there is not much of a downside, but the price is something to consider. It runs for about $25 which may seem a bit steep, but again it gets the job done, especially if you use non-wireless products (which the vast majority of gamers swear by anyway).
Ultimately, I recommend both of these products. It is clear that Cooler Master is targeting every type of gamer while releasing more of the niche products to complete the Storm lineup. Having yearned for quality gaming peripherals without breaking the bank, I and many others are happy to see Cooler Master releasing bolder products. Instead of treading little-by-little into unexplored waters, Cooler Master has literally released a storm, and there is no sign of it slowing down until every gamer is satisfied.
