VisionTek Go Drive SSD Review (240GB)

TECHNOLOGY X TEST BENCH AND PROTOCOL

A primary focus at Technology X is to relate our testing situations and equipment to that of the consumer. All of the components we use for testing and evaluation can be easily purchased at a relatively affordable price. The links provided below can assist in pricing, as well as availability for those of you who may find interest in our equipment.

New-System-Shot

SYSTEM COMPONENTS

This new PCIe Test Bench build was the result of some great relationships and purchases; our appreciation goes to be quiet, Corsair, Crucial, Intel, EVGA and InWin for their support in our project.  Our choice of components is very narrow, in that, we choose only what we believe to be among the best available and links are provided to each that will assist in hardware pricing and availability, should the reader be interested in purchase.

BENCHMARK SOFTWARE

For analytical purposes, Technology X uses benchmark software that is easily accessible for the consumer. Furthermore, our equipment is only “fine tuned” using the SSD Optimization Guide, meaning that CPU clock speeds have not been adjusted.

CRYSTAL DISK INFO 5.5.0

Crystal Disk Info is a great tool for displaying the characteristics and health of storage devices. It displays everything from temperatures, to the number of hours the device has been powered, and even to the extent of informing you of the firmware of the device.

Crystal Disk Info shows us that the VisionTek Go Drive is enabled with TRIM and SMART features, while also displaying the large amount of reads, writes and total number of hours that the drive has been powered on. Without the use of Crystal Disk Info, we would not have even known that the VisionTek Go Drive had been used previously, and with this knowledge we could give an approximate estimate as to how well the drive was going to perform. Let’s take a look and see if our predictions are correct.

ATTO DISK BENCHMARK VER. 2.47

ATTO Disk Benchmark is a relatively easy-to-use benchmark tool, which happens to be the benchmark of choice for many manufacturers. ATTO uses compressible data rather than random data, which results in higher performance and thus, higher benchmark scores. In our testing, we have selected the transfer size to range from 0.5KB to 8192KB, and have set the total length of the test to be 256MB.

Visiontek GoDrive 240GB SSD ATTO

As we can see here, the VisionTek Go Drive performs moderately and we can see why manufacturers tend to use ATTO as their benchmark of choice. As previously noted above, ATTO uses compressible data and thus performance measurements are increased. The VisionTek Go Drive has read speeds of 555 MB/s and write speeds of 530 MB/s. Let’s take a deeper look with incompressible data, which is more common for everyday use.

VisionTek is an American-based company  that traditionally has been known for graphic cards, and started to get their feet wet in memory and flash storage back in 2011.  This summer VisionTek released the Go Drive consumer SSD lineup, and here at Technology X we get the opportunity to test out the 240GB VisionTek Go Drive. Before we get started, it is important to point out that here at Technology X we emphasize the importance of using protocols, software and components that are easily available to the consumer. When we review SSD’s and other storage devices we also prefer to test…

TRAILING THE COMPETITION

The VisionTek Go Drive is an under-performing SSD that is accompanied by a great controller, mediocre asynchronous memory and a high price-point.
