FEATURES
HyperX manages to fit a few handy features into the Alloy FPS. They do a good job of making them easy to use and not too complicated, which handily fit into the theme of this keyboard. We will start with the 3-pronged USB/Thunderbolt cable and phone charging USB port. It is strange that HyperX put a non data USB port instead of having a fully functional data port to plug a mouse into. It is nice to be able to charge a phone but we think there is much more convenience to the consumer if the port supported data.
Instead of having a third party software control, the HyperX Alloy FPS gives you a plug and play keyboard with red LED control, media control as well as game mode all integrated. First we have the F6 to F8 keys. With the function key plus any one of these three you can change to next song previous song or pause/play.Secondly we have the F9 to F12 keys. The first three are pretty self explanatory with volume controls while the last one is a great added feature. The game mode gives you 100% anti ghosting and full Nkey rollover. What does this mean to the average person? Game mode disables the Windows key to prevent accidental interruptions, while Anti-Ghosting and full N-key rollover let you press all keys simultaneously, with every keystroke registering and executed as quickly as you command.
Last, but definitely, not least we have the arrow keys. These give the red LED’s life by being able to adjust the brightness with the FN and up and down arrows. The right and left arrows control the added 6 lighting effects. From left to right you have full illumination, breathing, individual light on and fade, (our favoruite) the explosion effect, wave from right to left and full custom mode. The fully customizable option lets you pick which keys you want illuminated.
FINAL THOUGHTS AND GAMING OPINION
We would have never thought that something so small could do such big things. The lack of a data USB port was the only real adjustment we would have made. The HyperX Alloy FPS is a must buy for any travelling gamer, any FPS gamer or those who have limited space. In the gaming collective, especially in first person shooters, competitive gamers look for the extra advantage wherever they can. With fifteen+ hours logged on Overwatch, the key responsiveness, anti-ghosting mode and textured keys really give you the advantage you are looking for. A compact design and features that are very user friendly give you all the reason to make this reasonably priced powerhouse part of your next gaming session. The Alloy FPS was priced at $139.99CAD with a limited two-year warranty at the time of this review. Giving it an easy two thumbs up and our Gold Seal for HyperX’s first keyboard!
