Corsair Carbide Spec-04 Mid Tower Review

Today, we announce the launch of Corsairs new Carbide Spec-04.  As a step up from the Spec-03, we hope the bold, angular, hard edged exterior can keep up with the other big names in chassis building. We cant wait to test the airflow and customization options of this high speed rig. Corsair has also been kind enough to throw in some of their cooling components such as their AIO H60 CPU cooler and two ML 120 Magnetic Levitation fans.

PACKAGING AND CONTENTS

The unboxing of our Carbide Spec-04 was actually quite fun. We didn’t have to worry about any heavy metals or cumbersome glass panels which made lifting our chassis easy! The box does not weigh as much as the clunky tempered glass cases however still looked and felt pretty well made. A styrofoam buffer on the top and underside provided ample protection from any postal mishaps. Contents included with our case were a six language manual as well as hardware for installation. What really popped out to us was the shape and colour of the Spec-04. Many chassis like to stick to the square look and add extras like tempered glass to try and make the case look professional.  The Corsair Carbide Spec-04 really gives you the warm and fuzzy with its asymmetrical hard edge design. Both sides of this chassis are very standard with one side having a 27cm high by 29cm wide plastic window, while the opposite side houses our Spec-04’s Input/Output. We are quite pleased to see the I/O on the side instead of being on the “all so familiar” front. The I/O positioned on the side is very minimal providing one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0 as well as power/reset and headphones/mic. What gives this case the interesting look is the hard edges which makes this chassis look super original. The yellow and black give the 2x120mm or 2x140mm fan cover and grilled vent an interesting finish while still maintaining airflow functionality. On the Spec-04’s aft and bottom are pretty simply made. On the rear is a 120mm fan destination with the usual motherboard expansion slots and PSU slot. One thing we are a little disappointed with is the one vent for the PSU fan with nothing else for venting. Adding another vent or extending the bottom vent with room for another fan would be an improvement that we would like to see. Lastly, the Carbide Spec-04 has four sturdy rubber feet.

  1. Got this case when I had to do a CPU/Mobo upgrade. The shop did the work, but I was a bit miffed when I got back the system as there was no external access for an optical drive or card reader.
