REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS
As you read above, we included some science in our preliminary result analysis. The science behind our analysis was actually supported by our readings provided by the BACtrack Mobile. At first, our female test subject experienced an increase in BAC that was greater than our male test subject. Also, our female test subject had her reaction times decrease almost to her control test, which would be supportive of the fact that she may have been eliminating alcohol from her blood quicker than the male test subject – however the decrease in BAC on drink number 8 in the incremental test shows that the male featured the greater decrease in BAC – only by a small portion though.
Our test subjects found that they could sway the breathalyzer results significantly based upon their last drink. For instance, our male subject kept beer in his mouth until just before the breathalyzer test, his results are shown below.
When it comes to the accuracy of the BACtrack, unfortunately we didn’t have access to the ultimate comparison – an official police breathalyzer. However, we took the nerdy way out and did some calculations based upon alcoholic percentage and body weight, we also utilized a gender variable to come up with some theoretical results. The first graph below shows a comparison of ‘Theory Vs. Practical’ for the female test subject, while the second graph showcases this comparison for our male test subject.
Comparing our theoretical results to our practical results show quite the variance in data. According to our theoretical results, our female test subject would have been at 0.205 BAC by the time the test had concluded, where the BACtrack mobile had her sitting at 0.072 BAC. Interestingly enough, our reaction time testing counters the theoretical argument. Should our female test subject actually have reached the 0.205 BAC, her reaction times would not have been where they were.
The comparison between our male’s theoretical and practical results actually proved to be less of a deviation than the female’s comparative graph. Theory shows two outliers, or estranged points, at the fourth and eighth beverage, however is nearly spot on with the rest of the practical results.
Overall, the BACtrack mobile proved to be a neat little device, which our test subjects had a great time being guinea pigs for. The BACtrack is extremely portable, and from what we can see above, provides some very consistent results. A quick search of Amazon shows that you can pick up this device for $99.
The accompanying iOS application was easy-to-use, intuitive and straight forward. While the BACtrack device is not an ideal solution for determining whether or not to drive (not that any device should) however we would recommend that BACtrack Mobile for anyone who is looking to keep tabs on their drinking habits, wanting to learn more about how their body metabolizes alcohol and are looking for an easy way to estimate when their BAC will return to 0.00%. For this we easily award BACtrack our Innovative Award for their BACtrack Mobile Breathalyzer. Until next time … Cheers!
