We continue our Storage Visions 2014 coverage by checking out the Drobo booth and their newest and greatest. Technology X got the opportunity to speak with Paul Du, Solutions Architect for Drobo, and he explains to us the benefits of personal cloud storage.
The Drobo Transporter and Transporter Sync, has opened up the market against DropBox. With DropBox, your storage can be monitored by the NSA and has been subject to multiple security vulnerabilities in the past. Never mind the fact that once you exceed your initial 2GB of free cloud storage, to upgrade to the next step up is $99 for the year (100GB option).
The Drobo Transporter is your personal cloud storage device. It is as simple as connecting the Drobo Transporter to the internet, via an ethernet cable or WiFi, and downloading the Drobo application. The Drobo application is available across Mac, PC, iOS and Android. The Transporter can also sync to another Transporter, which is an added benefit as you can have a back up of your data that is stored on your Drobo Transporter.
The Drobo Transporter is available in three capacities, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB, each are available at a very reasonable price of $149, $249 and $349 respectively. Additionally, the Drobo Transporter can have the internal drive removed and replaced with your drive of choice, which makes upgrades extremely easy and painless.
The other option that is available is the Drobo Transporter Sync. This device is “B.Y.O.S.” (Bring Your Own Storage), where you simply connect your existing external storage device to the Drobo Transporter Sync via USB. A very easy option, at an also very affordable price of $99.
