Lenovo today announced that the IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC continues to help redefine technology in the home with the introduction of three innovative table concepts that integrate Lenovo’s groundbreaking interpersonal PC with contemporary furniture. Lenovo will showcase the commissioned custom table designs – “The Treehouse” built for the 21^st century playroom, “The Nest” for the modern living room and “AT-UM” for the digital workshop at the 25^th annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair taking place May 18-21 in New York City at the Jacob K. Javits Center.

“We envisioned Horizon as a totally new type of technology product – one that people use to create and enjoy content in a collaborative way, not a personal device but rather an interpersonal device,” said Jeff Meredith, vice president, Lenovo Business Group Marketing. “As an entirely new technology device, Horizon has inspired furniture designers to explore new ways to make it accessible and naturally fit into the home.”

For example, when the Horizon lays flat the Aura interface activates and allows four people to use it simultaneously and play games together on its multitouch screen with joysticks, strikers and e-dice. Equipped with high performance Intel Core i7 processors, NVIDIA GeForce graphics and Dolby Home Theatre v4 audio even digital music creation software from StageLight, co-creation happens easily in either mode.

The Treehouse

Peter Pan and Robinson Crusoe’s forts have nothing on this 21^st century treehouse. Designed by Judson Beaumont of Straight Line Designs, the Treehouse creates a magical world of whimsy to bring children and people of all ages together. Beaumont’s inspiration sprang from the Horizon’s roots in family-oriented games. Always looking to bend straight lines, Beaumont crafted the Treehouse to pair two seemingly separate objects into one seamless piece filled with personality.

“When I first learned about the Horizon and what it could do, I imagined excited children gathered around it,” said Judson Beaumont, Straight Line Designs. “Technology has become an important part of everyday living, and this design showcases Horizon’s ability to interact with children and people of all ages, enabling them to discover, create and play. The Nest – Family Game Night Redefined

The Nest represents the next chapter in living room design hosting a 27-inch PC that essentially jumped into a coffee table. Input Creative Studio designers Brooke Lichtenstein and Yiannos Vrousgos blend a modern take on the nesting table idea with the Lenovo Horizon. It’s a new digital take on family game night where players can battle onscreen using strikers in Air Hockey or toss the e-dice on the glass in Monopoly or look at photos together for a stroll down memory lane. Horizon comes preloaded with a host of edutainment games for the whole family. The table even has hidden chairs and storage compartments for the Horizon’s accessories (power supply, keyboard and physical gaming pieces).

“Even in today’s technology-driven age, home is still where the heart is, and it’s where people spend the majority of their time. Horizon inspired us to enhance family life by integrating technology. Inspired by the dynamic styles of today’s life and work, AT-UM fits perfectly in a studio or café and invites multiple people to collaborate and interact by laying the Horizon flat or using it vertically as an AIO PC.

A crossover between a desk, a stand and an easel, the AT-UM brings the likable and smart three-legged creature to life and provides a collaborative workspace for all types of creative people, at home and at work. The table features strong graphic and functional moments with splashes of color along with hidden surprises like a sliding accessories drawer and a keyboard tray that caters both to lefties and righties.

“The combination of the analog and digital worlds intrigues and inspires me to mix them and produce unexpected process and products. The piece I designed and made for Lenovo is probably one of the best examples of this approach: it’s playful and functional, a surprising hybrid between technology and furniture. Lian-Li Industrial Co. Ltd. announces a new brushed aluminum Mini-ITX chassis – PC-Q30. With its curve-shaped design and large acrylic front window the fully aluminum PC-Q30 allows users to show off their systems, and is sure to be the talking piece of any room.

Whether in the living room, bedroom, or office, the PC-Q30 with its curve-shape and brushed aluminum finish takes visual command without being ostentatious. Additionally, DIY builders can put their stylized internal components and intricate builds on full display – as they should not be hidden from sight.

Thanks to the two expansion slots on the top of the chassis, the PC-Q30 supports graphics cards up to 200mm (7.8”). For storage, up to four 2.5” hard drives or SSDs can be mounted in the removable hard drive cage at the bottom of the chassis.

A 140mm fan in the rear of the chassis expels hot air, while ventilation on the top and side allows for cool air to enter. A small form factor power supply up to 125mm (4.9”) is placed on rubber pads in order to reduce vibrations.

The front of the PC-Q30 is minimalistic in aesthetics and houses the dual LED illuminated power button that glows blue when on and red while loading. As technology advances faster and faster, data keeps getting bigger and bigger. Even mobile devices such as smartphones and cameras have large storage requirements. High-definition video and pictures are taking more and more space, and carrying around bulky external drives and notebooks to off-load media is just not convenient compared to the standards of today.

Cloud storage is great, but the requirements are heavy and for many, costly. Furthermore many of these devices only serve a single purpose that makes them stand-out. Perhaps it is storage, perhaps it is streaming; in the end, the versatility is not there.

In response, Kingston have released the MobileLite Wireless Portable Card Reader. For $70 you get what is advertised as a handheld NAS unit – a video, picture, file, music, document, and internet/LAN streamer all-in-one. Of course we cannot forget about storage for which there can be an infinite amount due to the built-in USB and SD-card slots. The MobileLite seems like the perfect complement to storage-hungry mobile devices, and the perfect chaperon for travelling; only in testing shall we see if all these features hold true.

SPECIFICATIONS AND FINDINGS

These specifications are primarily for iOS, as we can see from only two compatible video formats. This does not mean however that the MobileLite cannot play or view other files; quite the contrary. The file-format support is based on your device, as the MobileLite will stream any file you store in it.

The five-hour battery life is not bad, but could be better. The range of expandable memory is exquisite, but it would have been appreciated had Kingston included an SD card or flash drive with the actual kit.

Keep in mind also that the USB headers are all USB 2.0. Considering that standard microUSB headers and cables do not come in USB 3.0, and that it is the method of communication between the MobileLite and external device, USB 3.0 would not be beneficial. Note the wireless-N compatibility – we will get to that later.

PACKAGING AND EXTERIOR

The Kingston MobileLite Wireless comes in a small box with product information on the front and the back, and a glimpse of what the device looks like. As we can see the MobileLite is compatible with iOS and Android, but there are ways around using it for other operating systems as we will explore a bit later.

Contents include the MobileLite Wireless of course, alongside a microUSB to USB cable, a microSD to SD card adapter, and warranty/installation documentation. Again the packaging does not include any expandable media, which is unfortunate considering the device does not have any built-in storage:

The device itself comes in a sleek matte-black and gray colour scheme. It has a nice smooth plastic exterior and is small enough so that it can be stored easily even in a pocket or purse. The front of the unit has three LEDs – power, wi-fi, and internet going from the left to right. These shine green, blue, and blue again respectively once links have been established:

For network devices we typically see IP information, or quick notes outlining how to configure the device and access it. Sadly this information is not found on the back, and neither is it in the documentation; hence we had to find it manually through the apps. There is also the lack of a grip surface – most notably rubberized feet to prevent slipping.

The Genius DVR-FHD 590 HD Vehicle Recorder is a full HD 1080P vehicle recorder that includes an extra wide 128Deg viewing angle, 2.4″ rear TFT LCD screen, high power LED for low lighting conditions as well as several other key features that make this unit very attractive.  Our video will speak to many of its features, however, check below for some great pictures and opinion regarding this well built cam by Genius

EXTERIOR PACKAGING

Perhaps the first thing that caught our eye with the Genius DVR-FHD590 HD vehicle camera was the exterior packaging itself.  Where so many companies fail to get crucial information acrossed in their product, Genius has probably the best layout we have seen on an exterior packaging design to date.

Not only does it portray a very accurate picture of the product, but also, Genius has found a way to cover every question that the consumer might have, including many we never.  Genius has actually made it very easy for us to list specifications and features simply by including their exterior packaging for review.

What it doesn’t speak to on the package is battery life as this unit contains a built in lithium rechargeable battery and we tackled that first thing, determining that this camera will last 1.5 hours while operating on battery alone.

In addition, the DVR-590 contains HDR technology which allows it to adjust for the best picture in sudden lighting condition changes.  The video displays a great example of this as we travel through the Welland tunnel.

GENIUS DVR-FHD590 VEHICLE CAM COMPONENTS

The DVR-FHD590 is very well constructed of a hard blue and black acrylic exterior.  While the front displays the wide angle lens and high power LED for low lighting conditions, the back of the unit has a 2.4″  TFT LCD display and four buttons utilized for the menu of the unit.

On the left, we find the power switch and access for a 32GB SD card, while there is a USB connector, mini-HDMI port and reset switch on the right.

ACCESSORIES

Included in the DVR590 packaging is the camera itself, a swivel suction mount that has two way adjustments and an easy one push button for camera shoe removal, a visor mount, cigarette lighter power plug as well as the standard manuals and software disks.

There is no setup or software necessary, however, as simply plugging the included USB cable into any computer brings up the units folders for downloading of files.  In fact, something definitely good to see was the power cable having a length of 12′ which means that it can be tucked away without limiting the positioning of the car camera.

GENIUS DVR-FHD590 FEATURES THAT STAND OUT

The DVR590 has a very appealing feature set, in that, it will turn on and off with your vehicle.  To enhance this, there is a motion sensor that, once activated, will start and stop the cameras recording with vehicle movement.  There is also a G-Sensor within that immediately activates the camera at point of collision and creates a protected file for such things as evidence or insurance purposes.

In addition, we were impressed with the fact that the camera is a 5 megapixel camera capable of 30FPS, has a decent battery life for its size and we thought that the HDR technology was very evident while traveling through the tunel.  Throw in the fact that the camera records in .MOV format with H.264 compression for smaller stored file size, as well as the fact that it is priced under the $150 mark, and Genius has an excellent product on their hand.  All in all, the only thing we might like to have seen was the ability to utilize a 64GB microSD card, rather than the specified 32GB.

Sometimes as tech geeks we tend to overlook the little things. Such was the case when we received a few items from PQI this week that included their new AirCam Sports Camera, PQI Air Drive and the product we are looking at today, the PQI Air Card. The PQI Air Card replaces the SD card of your camera or multimedia device, allowing you to stream pictures and video directly to your smart phone for instant viewing, via free mobile PQI mobile software.

The PQI Air Card is an SD card that can house a microSD card and is fully WiFi capable, allowing up to three devices to connect simultaneously.  Specifications for the PQI Air Card list its maximum capacity to be a 32GB class 6 microSD card, however, we are using the Patriot LX 64GB class 10 microSD card without any difficulty whatsoever.

The definite ‘plus’ of the PQI Air Card is that there is really no setup required and it is capable of instant sharing right off the hop. The PQI Air Card is available with different included microSD card capacities and prices start at $62.

A perfect example of the benefit to such a device is through sport activities such as motorcycle travel.  We stream video from our mounted PQI Air Cam and both can stream it directly to our Samsung Galaxy Note II smartphones as soon as the video is complete.  If we like the video, it can be downloaded directly to the phone right then and there.
